Perry Saddle Hut

The Heaphy Track is a "Great Walk", and is promoted as such to the tourist industry both nationally & internationally by DOC. The hut replacement programme commenced in 2012 with Perry Saddle huts.

To begin work on the new Perry Saddle Hut we had to airlift in approximately 55 tonnes of materials and equipment. The 2 huts were built over a 5 month period, including the demolition and removal of the 2 de-commissioned huts. All labour and sub-trades had to be flown in and out of the site during this period. Isolation and weather play a huge part in this unique environment, with the Team experiencing numerous days of wet, squally weather, and even snow. But with 10 hour days being the norm, they were able to complete this project ahead of time and on budget!
